The history of Dhanushkodi is thousands of years old. Due to the Ram Setu built during the Ramayana period, it has always been considered a pilgrimage site. This village, which was under the control of the Sethupati dynasty that protected the Ram Setu, has always been important for India.

Before 1964 it was a happy village with schools, stations, churches and temples. This place also has great mythological and commercial importance. Due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean and Sri Lanka on the other, this village was known as a major port. The main occupation and means of livelihood of the people here was fishing. There was also a train track from Rameshwaram to Dhanushkodi but this village was destroyed due to sea disturbances and natural disasters.

This village was completely destroyed in the hurricane of 1964 and since then it has turned into a deserted place. About 1800 people died in the storm/cyclone that occurred on 22 December. In the same storm, 115 passengers traveling in the Pamban-Dhanushkodi passenger train were swept away along with the train. Since then Dhanushkodi was declared a haunted village. No one is allowed to stay here at night.

During the December 2004 cyclone, about 500 meters of Dhanushkodi came above water, which had earlier been submerged in the sea during the December 1964 cyclone. Since then, the ruins of the village station and church that were destroyed in the storm can be seen here. Tourists cannot stay at night in Dhanushkodi and hence there are no hotels or guesthouses here. Although no one is allowed to stay here after the evening, still some fishermen have started coming and living here with their families.
