Shitala Mata Temple Gurugram is considered one of the nine Shaktipeeths in the country. This temple is known for many family religious rituals. Often newly married couples come here for prayers. People from far away cities and villages come here for the Mundan Sanskar of children at home. Shitala Mata is highly regarded as the goddess of health and that is why devotees suffering from diseases come here to pray in the hope of recovery.

Mythology – Sheetala Mata Mandir Gurugram

In Mahabharata, Mother Shitala has been called the guru mother of Pandavas and Kauravas. According to the epic Mahabharata, Mata Shitala was the wife of Guru Dronacharya and sister of Guru Kripacharya. Before marriage her name was Kripi. She dedicated herself to the care of sick children, especially those suffering from smallpox, due to which people around her affectionately and respectfully called her Mata (Mother). A temple was built in his honour. She is also known as Mata Shitala or Mata Masani, i.e. the goddess of smallpox.

There is another mythological story related to Sheetala Mata in Skanda Purana, according to which Sheetala Devi was born from Brahmaji and she is considered to be a form of Goddess Shakti. According to a legend, Mother Sheetala had come from Devlok with Jwarasur made from the sweat of Lord Shiva with pulses in her hand to live on earth in the kingdom of King Virat.

King Virat did not allow Mother Shitala to live in his kingdom due to which she became very angry. Due to the anger of Mother Shitala, red rashes appeared on the skin of King Virat’s subjects and their skin started burning due to the heat. Then King Virat apologized for his mistake and after this King Virat offered raw milk and cold lassi to Goddess Sheetala and this calmed down the anger of Mother Sheetala. Since then, the tradition of offering cold dishes to Mata Shitala has been going on.

Shitala Mata Temple is an ancient temple located in Gurugram which is considered to be about 400 years old. There are some popular beliefs related to the establishment of the present form of this temple. It is believed that a person from Gurugram named Singha had darshan of Mata Sheetala in his dream and in the dream Mata Sheetala expressed her wish to him to build her temple. Following the same dream, following the orders of Mata Shitala, Singha built a temple here.

It is said that earlier Sheetala Mata Temple was not located in Gurugram but in Keshopur, Delhi.

In India, every village has a goddess and Sheetala Mata is considered to be the family deity of Gurugram i.e. Gurgaon. In one hand of Shitala Mata, she has a pot of cold drink, pulses and disease-killing water and in the other hand she has a broom and neem leaves.

The vehicle of Sheetala Mata is the donkey, the most patient animal in this world. Sheetala Mata is considered to have seven sisters which are Runika, Ghrnika, Mahala, Mangala, Sethla and Durga. Sheetala Mata is also known as the goddess of cleanliness.

Timings – Sheetala Mata Mandir Gurugram

Puja timings at Shitala Mata Temple are from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Special prayers are organized here on the days of Sheetala Saptami and Sheetala Ashtami.

A large number of people from other areas also come to the temple and get their children tonsured here. Inside the temple, there is a banyan tree near the main entrance where devotees make a wish by tying chunni and kalava and offering water. People also come here to have children and to fulfill their wishes for their home.

Although one can come to Shitala Mata Temple at any time to have darshan of Mata, but during the days of Navratri, a huge crowd gathers here. According to the Hindu calendar, huge fairs are organized here during Chaitra Navratri and Ashwin Navratri. During this time, lakhs of devotees come for darshan and stand in line here, waiting for long hours for darshan.

Basoda – Sheetala Mata Mandir Gurugram

Basoda is a special festival of Sheetala Mata. For this, people prepare dishes to be offered to Mata Shitala a day before and this stale bhog is offered to Mata Shitala.

Gurugram Bhim Kund which is known as the pond of Pinchokhada. This pond is located between Sectors 4, 6 and 8, about 3 km from Rajiv Chowk, Gurugram.

Eklavya Temple is located in Khandsa village of Sector 37 of Gurugram city. This temple was built in honor of Ekalavya. According to folklore, this temple is the only temple of Ekalavya and it is the same place where Ekalavya cut off his thumb and offered it to Guru Drona.
