History – Stok Palace Ladakh
Stok Palace was established in the early 19th century. It was built by King Tsepal Namgyal of the Namgyal Dynasty. Before Stok Palace, the Namgyal dynasty used to live in the Leh Palace in Leh and the governance of the state was done from there. Due to the attack on Leh by the Dogra army, the Namgyal ruler shifted his residence from Leh Palace to here.
The Namgyal dynasty was a prominent royal family of Ladakh. Stok Palace was the royal residence and a symbol of the Namgyal rulers’ authority in the region. The palace was not only a royal residence but also the center of political power in Stok.

The distance from Leh to Stok village is about 15 kilometers, and the journey by road usually takes about 30-40 minutes. The drive from Leh to Stokke village is quite beautiful where beautiful views of the Stok Range and the Indus River can be seen.
