History – Coimbatore Tourist Places
Coimbatore had been a tribal area and part of the Kungu kingdom until the 3rd century. It was under the control of the Rashtrakuta dynasty and this area was near a trade route of Rome. In the tenth century, the king of Chola dynasty took control over it. After the Chola dynasty, it came under the control of the Chalukyas, then the Pandyas, the Hoysalas and till the 15th century, it came under the control of the Vijayanagara Empire. In the 17th century, it came under the control of the Nayak dynasty of Madurai. Later Mysore ruler Haider Ali took control over it. After Haider Ali, it was ruled by Tipu Sultan and later after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in the war between Tipu and the British, it came under British rule.
After defeating Tipu Sultan, the British East India Company took control of it and made it a part of Madras Presidency. The city of Coimbatore has also played a very important role in the struggle for independence. Mahatma Gandhi visited this city several times during the freedom struggle.
After independence, Coimbatore was made a district of Tamil Nadu state.

Mrudhmalai Mandir – Coimbatore Tourist Places
In Tamil language, Malai means hill. Marudhamalai Temple is situated on a hill at a height of 600 meters above the sea level and is dedicated to Lord Murugan/Kartikeya. In South India, Lord Kartikeya is known by the names Murugan, Skanda and Subrahmaniya. This temple is dedicated to the Nataraja form of Lord Shiva. This temple was built by the Chola king Karikala Chola in the 2nd century. This temple is one of the oldest temples in Tamil Nadu. Perur Pateshwara Temple is situated on the banks of Noyyal River. It is said that this temple is at the place where Lord Shiva performed Anand Tandavam.

This temple is situated at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is a famous temple of Coimbatore. This temple is situated in a 6 feet wide cave in which devotees have darshan of five Lingas. Vellingiri hill is called Mount Kailash of the South.

Adiyogi idol has currently become a new identity of Coimbatore. This idol is of Adiyogi i.e. Lord Shiva. The height of this statue is 112 feet (34 meters). This statue is 45 meters long and 25 meters wide and is made of steel. This statue of Adiyogi has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the “Largest Bust Sculpture” in the world. The weight of this statue is approximately 500 tons.
